Income Tax India has reported that Over 7 Crore ITRs have already been filed for A.Y. 2026-27, while reminding a specific group of taxpayers about the upcoming filing deadline.
The due date is 31 August 2026 for taxpayers with business or professional income whose income tax returns are not subject to audit. The department has urged those taxpayers to complete their non-audit filings without waiting until the last minute.
Who must file by 31 August 2026
The deadline applies to taxpayers who meet both stated conditions:
- They have business or professional income.
- Their returns are not subject to audit.
The reminder concerns income tax returns for A.Y. 2026-27. The department’s filing update indicates that more than 7 Crore returns for the assessment year have already been submitted.
Taxpayers covered by the non-audit business or professional income category have until 31 August 2026 to file their returns. The department’s message asks them to act before the due date rather than leave the submission until the final day.
