India’s Gaganyaan programme is designed to send three Indian astronauts into an orbit approximately 400 kilometres above Earth, keep them there for three days and bring them safely back to the planet.

Programme objective

Approved in January 2019, Gaganyaan is India’s first human spaceflight programme. Its stated mission plan combines a crewed orbital flight with a safe return to Earth.

The programme forms part of India’s space journey over the past 12 years. Its central objective is to demonstrate the country’s ability to carry Indian astronauts into orbit and complete their return safely.
