A ₹56+ crore proposal has been submitted for a Ladakh water security push involving 36 check dams. The planned infrastructure is intended to strengthen water availability, support irrigation and improve the region’s resilience to climate pressures.
The proposal covers two types of check dams in Leh and Kargil. Seven rock check dams are proposed for Leh along the Sindhu River, while 29 RCC check dams are planned for Kargil along the Suru River.
Irrigation and water storage
The proposed works are expected to irrigate 18,600+ acres. The plan also focuses on harnessing snow and glacier meltwater, linking the check-dam programme to Ladakh’s seasonal water resources.
The initiative is designed to build on successful pilot dams. Its stated direction is towards a water-secure and climate-resilient Ladakh.
Key elements of the proposal include:
- ₹56+ crore in submitted funding proposals
- 36 check dams across Leh and Kargil
- Seven rock check dams along the Sindhu River in Leh
- 29 RCC check dams along the Suru River in Kargil
- Irrigation coverage of 18,600+ acres
