Super El Nino could drive 451,000 heat-linked deaths worldwide, including 15,800 in India
A University of Chicago Climate Impact Lab study estimates that the ongoing Super El Nino could bring around 451,000 additional heat-related deaths worldwide between September 2026 and February 2027. India could record about 15,800 of those deaths, with nearly half expected between December and February.
